The cookie law gives the website users insight and control over the cookies that are being placed on their computer. The main goal of the project is to protect the user’s privacy.

This means, for you as a website owner – that you have to inform the user clear and detailed about the cookies that are going to be saved on his/her PC, and the purpose of doing that. Referring to the terms and conditions or privacy policy is not enough anymore. It has to be done in an obvious way, and the client has to virtually sign an agreement about it by clicking an accept button.

What do you need to do to comply with the cookie law?

  • Identify which cookies are used on your website. Find out if they fit under the Cookies law or not.
  • If you have cookies that fall under the cookie law - inform the users clearly about the cookies that are going to be saved on their PC.
  • Allow users to accept permission
  • Allow users to decline permission. This usually will mean that some functionality of the website will become unavailable, so you should inform the user about that as well.

The law supposes that clients can report websites to ACM, that can lead in case of a law violation to a maximum fine of 450.000 euros for you as a website owner.
